School of Fine Arts logoThe School of Fine Arts offers private and group instruction for art, musical theater, instruments, and voice with lessons for all ages conveniently located at the church. Instruction is designed to use positive teaching methods and experienced instructors to equip students with the knowledge and tools to excel in the field of Fine Arts.

Class Instruction

Class offerings will be confirmed upon enrollment of at least 10 students unless otherwise indicated. Each student is responsible for obtaining any material required for class study.

Art 1 (ages 5-9 years) – Thursdays @ 5:00 p.m.
Teacher: Niki Parsons
In this weekly one-hour class, students will explore a variety of artistic adventures. From graphite to paint and clay, students will get hands-on experience and an introduction to fundamental art technique. Each student will end the semester with a variety of finished works of art.

Art 2 (ages 10 years and up) – Thursdays @ 6:00 p.m.
Teacher: Niki Parsons
In this weekly one-hour class for those who have completed Art 1, students will be taught fine art skill development through more specialized instruction in drawing and step-by-step painting instruction. Emphasis will be on the essentials of drawing, value, color, and technique. Students will create several finished drawings and paintings throughout the course of the semester.

Art Basics for Adults - Not offered this semester.
Teacher: Niki Parsons
This weekly one-hour class will allow you to explore the world of art and its many exciting media. We will begin with the basics of drawing and proportion and then advance into multiple mediums of art. Students will leave the class having completed works in pencil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and even clay. This class is open to adults of all ages and skill levels.

Musical Theater 1 (ages 5-9 years) – Mondays @ 4:45 p.m.
Teacher: Jennifer Freeman
This weekly one-hour class is for children who are beginning to develop their acting, singing, and movement skills. Students will learn the basics of projecting, memorizing, stage direction, pantomime, and character development. At the end of the semester, the class will present a mini-musical where they will showcase their music selections and theater pieces. This class is specifically designed to engage children who have displayed an interest in theater in a fun way that sparks their creativity.

Musical Theater 2 (ages 10-15 years) – Tuesdays @ 6:30 p.m.
Teacher: Jennifer Freeman

Individual lessons for all ages of budding artists. The instruction will focus on development of artistic skills and finding their individual creative voice.

Brass

Individual weekly 30-minute lessons will focus on the particular playing level and needs of the individual student. Special attention will be given to playing posture, embouchure, technique, and performance practice.

Creative Arts - Flexible lesson times and cost
Teacher: Rachel Henry
Individual sessions include time for personal self expression and reflection. These sessions can be used to explore areas of personal growth as well to develop skills useful in school, work and play. These sessions are open to people of all ages and backgrounds - no artistic skill required!

Drum Set & Percussion - Flexible lesson times
Teacher: Todd Lineberger
Individual weekly 30-minute sessions will focus on making lessons a fun filled learning environment while addressing accuracy and the students goals. Students will have the oppotunity to read and write music if desired. Students will learn limb independence using rhythm patterns so they will become conditioned to the patterns. The goal is for students to play a variety of rhythmic patterns more as a reflex action as opposed to counting out each note and rest.

Guitar - Flexible lesson times
Teacher: Janet Sneed
Individual weekly 30-minute lessons will focus on the particular playing level and needs of the individual student. Students will learn the fundamentals of chords, scales, strum patterns and finger picking. Concepts learned in class will be applied to songs and chord progressions.

Music Therapy - Call for information.
Teacher: Laura Logue-Poteet
Individual lessons in which a music therapist uses music to motivate children and adults with disabilities to work on their cognitive, communicative and academic goals and objectives.

Piano - Tuesday/Thursdays 3:00-8:00 p.m. / Wednesdays 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Beginning, intermediate, and advanced
Teacher: Maria King, Judy Konesky
Individual weekly 30-minute lessons will focus on the particular playing level and needs of the individual student. Special attention will be given to playing posture, technique, scales, and performance practice.

Strings - Tuesdays 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. / Wednesdays 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Violin, viola, cello, and bass
Teachers: Laura Logue-Poteet, Andie Smith
Individual weekly 30-minute lessons will focus on the particular playing level and needs of the individual student. Special attention will be given to instrument care, bowing, technique, and performance practice.

Voice - Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays. 3:30-7:30 p.m.
Teachers: Jennifer Freeman, Denise Patton
Individual weekly 30-minute lessons will focus on the particular performance level and needs of the individual student. Special attention will be given to tone production, breath support, diction and musical phrasing and style.

Woodwinds
Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone

Individual weekly 30-minute lessons will focus on the particular playing level and needs of the individual student. Special attention will be given to playing posture, embouchure, technique, and performance practice.

Tuition

Registration Fee: $25 per year
Private Instruction: $90 per month. Lesson fees are due in advance by the first of each month.
Class Instruction: $175 for 16 one-hour classes unless otherwise indicated. Class fees are due 2 weeks before the first class meeting.

FACULTY INFORMATION

Jennifer Freeman received her Masters of Music degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas and her Bachelor's of Music Degree from Belmont University in Nashville. She has been teaching private voice for the past 13 years, at Richland College in Dallas, and at Hendersonville Christian Academy most recently. Jennifer has been a soloist with the Dallas Symphony, the Fort Collins Symphony, the Wichita Sinfonia and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Jennifer was in the national tour of Wizard of Oz and performed at theaters such as Casa Manana, Dallas Theater Center, Atlanta TOTS, Kansas City Starlight Theater, Pittsburgh CLO, Dallas Summer Musicals, Cohoes Theatre, OKC Lyric Theatre, and St. Louis Stages. Her favorite theater roles include Julie in Carousel, Rosabud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Maria in The Sound of Music, and Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. She and her husband, Troy Freeman, have two daughters. Her favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6.

Rachel Henry studied Art Education and Fiber Art at Tennessee Technological University. After earning her Bachelor's degree in Fine Art, she received her Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Trevecca Nazarene University. Rachel loves to use creative expression through art and therapy whenever possible. She has been teaching private and group art lessons in several locations for the past 8 years. She firmly believes that art can be a fun and powerful way for everyone to express themselves.

Throughout her early years, Rachel was able to study under several talented local artists such as Darlene Shadden, Charles Brindley, and Jeanne Brady. These early experiences showed her that God had created her to use art to serve others, and ultimately Him in her life. Rachel is married to Jeff, the Middle School Minister at FBC. Together they love working with students and serving in their church. Rachel feels it is such a blessing to be able to use the gifts God has given her to teach, counsel, and serve others.

Maria King graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor's degree in Music, principle in voice and a minor in Music Theory and Music History. She also graduated from North Harris College with an Associate of Arts degree, principle in Music. She was employed with Sherman Clay for 10 years and taught for Yamaha Music Education System. She taught in Houston with the largest Yamaha School in the country and co-managed another. She is a two time recipient of the Sherman Clay Music Teacher of the Year award.

Maria began her love for music at the age of 7 when she started learning piano. She later began her vocal training at the age of 16. She currently directs in Children's Choir at First Baptist Church. Maria and her husband, Trent King, have two children.

Todd Lineberger attended Tennessee Tech University and the University of Tennessee where he majored in Music Performance and was a member of the "Pride of the Southland Band." He was an instructor for various high school drum lines at high school band camps in Alabama and Tennessee. In 1987, Todd moved to Nashville to pursue a career in the music business. For seven years, he toured nationally with major recording artists Archer Park and Noel Haggard on Atlantic Records and with James Bonamy on Epic Records.

Todd's love of music began at the age of four when his parents bought him his first snare drum. Most recently, Todd played drum set and percussion for the Living Room band at FBCH and currently plays in the worship band at Restoration Church in Nashville. He also continues to play with other local musicians on a variety of projects. Music is Todd's ministry and he is thankful that God blessed him the opportunity to share His love through music.

Laura Logue Poteet, a professional violinist, studied at Tennessee Tech University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy. She has studied violin with Gerald Greer of the Nashville Symphony and Elisabeth Small of Belmont University. As a board certified music therapist, she works primarily with children with autism, but has worked with children and adults with various disabilities throughout her career.

Niki Parsons studied commercial art and design at Pensacola Christian College and later received her Master's degree in Fine Art with an emphasis on the medium of watercolor. During graduate school, Niki was asked to teach several freshman drawing classes. More recently, she has taught art at Hendersonville Christian Academy for 5 years. Niki's work has been featured in several local art shows including the 2007 Central South Art Exhibit where she received the Monday Painter's award. Her work has also been published in Splash 9 The Best of Watercolor.

Niki's earliest training came from her mother, Diana Lawrence, who passed her love for art on to her two daughters. In high school, Niki studied watercolor painting under a local artist, Neil Kienitz in northwest Indiana. It was during this time that Niki began to develop her love for water media. Niki and her husband, Taaron, also an artist, have a young daughter. Together, Taaron and Niki enjoy painting and challenging each other to be better artists. Niki's goal in art and in life is to glorify her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in all things.

Denise Patton is an Adjunct Professor at Belmont University teaching in the Commercial Music Department. She has performed in many stages shows at Opryland U.S.A, in Celebrity Cruise Line ship shows, and has performed and worked with Lee Greenwood, Jim Ed Brown, Little Jimmy Dickens, Pam Tillis, Jim Nabors, Jeannie Sealy, Celine Dion, Roy Acuff, and Porter Wagoner. Denise currently is lead vocalist with the Craig Duncan Orchestra and is a session singer.

Denise has worked on many projects for LifeWay and has served as a music curriculum writer, a music editor, children's musical choreographer, and songwriter. She currently serves as the choreographer of "Worship Kidstyle."

Denise graduated Cum Laude from Middle Tennessee State with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a minor in Music. She holds a 1st Degree in Black Belt in Karate. She currently serves as the Director of Preschool & Children's Music Ministry at FBC. She enjoys life with her husband, David, and her two children, Dean and Nicole.

Andie Smith has had a long and varied career in music. She studied at Indiana University and received a Bachelor's degree in music education and music therapy with an emphasis on instrumental music and the cello from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. While her children were young, she taught violin, viola, and cello lessons, primarily using the Suzuki Approach. Her family was led to resettle in the middle Tennessee area, and once her children were in high school, she returned to the classroom, and teaches orchestra and chorus at Ellis Middle School. She studied vocal/general music as a post-graduate student at Belmont University. Andie is an active free-lance cellist in the greater Nashville area. She enjoys meeting the diverse needs of her students, and developing their talents, using a variety of approaches. When not teaching or performing, Andie enjoys spending time with her married children and her grandchildren.

Janet Sneed studied music at Concord University in Athens, West Virginia where she played trumpet four years in marching band and bass guitar in the school jazz band. A popular group locally, they also toured up and down the East coast. She taught piano and guitar while in college as well as being the pianist at her church. Janet began playing guitar at age 8, the piano at 12 and the bass guitar at 13. Though self taught initially, she reads music and tablature and is well versed in music theory.

Upon moving to Nashville, Janet immersed herself in music, playing with many groups with varying musical styles. She has played for theatre with Steeple Players of Hendersonville and the Roxy Theatre in Clarksville. She played acoustic guitar in the FBC orchestra for many years and bass in the contemporary Living Room service. Currently, she helps lead worship at Restoration Church in Nashville as well as Celebrate Recovery at Long Hollow Baptist in Gallatin. Janet has enjoyed playing music for over 30 years in many different genres from big Band to Pop. She enjoys writing and playing coffee houses whenever she can.
