POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, refers to behaviors exhibited as a reaction to a past trauma. These reactions can include panic attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, an inability to enjoy oneself without feelings of guilt, feeling emotionally numb, and having an overwhelming urge to run away.
These problems can be caused by wartime experiences, physical or sexual abuse, or witnessing horrible events. Many people with PTSD try to self-medicate their symptoms with alcohol or drugs, causing whole new problems. Treatment may consist of counseling to teach the patient to identify and manage the symptoms so that they are able to better control their reactions. Medication may also help with certain symptoms. Some psychiatrists and psychotherapists specialize in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
